H. P. Smith & Son has served the insurance needs of the southern tier for over 100 years. Today, the fifth generation of Smith's continues this tradition of "service with excellence" that began in 1890.

That year, Harry Pangburn Smith, also known as "Pang", began the business with his son, Asa Thomas Smith. Soon after, the editor of the Steuben Republican praised the burgeoning business for the success it is known for to this day:

It is seldom that one finds in a village the size of Woodhull a better stocked establishment than that of H. P. Smith & Son, furniture dealers, funeral directors, carpets, and insurance agency.

 Although Pang and Asa were no relation to the current Smith family, a strong bond developed between the two families during the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression. It was then that Jeffrey Smith Sr. began working for Asa for $15.00 a week, and came to think so highly of his employer that he named his second son after him. As Asa had no children himself, he willed the business to Jeff upon his death on New Year's Day, 1940.

Jeff's sons, Jeffrey Smith Jr. and Asa Thomas Smith ("Tom") took over the family business in 1956, and over the years expanded the business further with establishments in neighboring Addison and Canisteo. Today, both Jeff's and Tom's children participate in the business as do many other family and friends in the community.
